Care & Maintenance Questions
How do I clean the vinyl frames on my windows and doors?
The vinyl frames on your windows and doors can be cleaned with mild, nonabrasive soap and water. Rinse completely with clean water and wipe dry with a soft cloth. NEVER use abrasive or acidic cleaners; they might cause permanent damage to the frame finish.
What do you recommend to clean the glass?
To clean the glass on your windows and doors, we recommend mild dish soap and water. Rinse completely with clean water and wipe dry with a soft cloth. NEVER use petroleum-based cleaners, abrasive or acidic chemicals, razor blades, putty knives, abrasive pads, or high-pressure water hoses to clean the glass.
How do I lubricate my hardware?
We recommend that you lubricate the hardware once a year. In areas with high salt air, lubricating the hardware at least twice a year is recommended. After the hardware is clean and dried it must be lubricated to restore smooth operation, and in some cases corrosion resistance. Lubricate should be 100% silicone and can be found at most major hardware stores.
What are the vinyl windows of Custom Deluxe Windows?
They are made from a type of plastic called polyvinyl chloride (PVC). They are known for their durability, energy efficiency, and low maintenance requirements.
Do vinyl windows corrode or rust?
They do not. And this is one of the reasons vinyl windows are some of the best options for custom-made windows in California. They cannot rust, peel, or flake.
Why should I choose vinyl windows over traditional windows?
They offer many benefits over traditional windows, including energy savings, noise reduction, and improved curb appeal. They are also highly customizable and can be designed to fit any style or size of home.
How do I measure for custom vinyl windows?
You do not have to measure them on your own. Contact us to schedule a free in-home consultation. During the consultation, we will accurately measure your windows to obtain the exact dimensions.
What is the lead time for custom vinyl windows?
Lead times vary depending on the complexity and size of your order. Our team will provide you with an estimated lead time when you place your order.
Do you offer installation services?
Yes, we will install the custom vinyl windows you ordered from us. Our team of experienced installers will ensure that your windows are precisely installed and to your satisfaction.
What is the warranty for your vinyl windows?
We offer the best warranty in the industry. The insulated glass has a lifetime warranty against any seal failure. The white and almond vinyl extrusions are covered by our full lifetime warranty. For other colors or laminated vinyl extrusions, they are protected for 10 years.
Are your vinyl windows energy efficient?
Yes, our vinyl windows are designed to be highly energy efficient. They are equipped with features such as low-E glass and insulated frames to help reduce energy costs and improve indoor comfort.
How do I clean and maintain my vinyl windows?
Vinyl windows require minimal maintenance. We recommend cleaning them with a water solution and a mild soap. You should avoid abrasive cleaners or materials that could scratch the surface.
Do all of your windows come with thermal-pane glass?
Yes, all of our windows come with insulated glass. The glass consists of three pieces of glass sealed to a space. It creates an insulated air space resulting in better thermal performance. The glass also reduces condensation while it keeps the heat in during the winter and removes the heat during summer.
What causes condensation in the windows?
Condensation is caused by excess water vapor in the air that comes into contact with a surface, including a window that causes droplets of water. The windows built by CDW are made to keep the surface of the glass warmer and prevent condensation.
What is low emissivity glass?
It provides year-round comfort. It also boosts energy savings. The glass reduces heat gain, thereby, keeping your home colder during summer. It also keeps heat during winter as it reflects heat back into your home.
Do your windows include grids?
Our windows do not always include grids. You need to specify them in your order. Our grids are available in various styles and configurations. In that case, you can pick the pattern and design that suits your home’s architectural style and personal preferences.
What is the difference between a double-hung and a single-hung window?
The main difference between these two types of windows is how the sashes operate. In a single hung window, the top sash is fixed. The only way to move it up or down is through the bottom sash. The double-hung window, on the other hand, has both top and bottom sashes that you can open and close independently.
Between double-hung windows and sing-hung windows, which ones are more energy-efficient?
Both types are energy efficient. Our team ensures that they are properly installed. Proper installation is vital for your windows’ energy efficiency. Double-hung windows offer better ventilation features, however. Because of that, they provide better airflow that can regulate the temperature in your home and reduce your reliance on heating and cooling systems.
Can I install the windows myself?
You can install the windows yourself. But we do not recommend it. Our team of windows installers will ensure that the job is done correctly. Because they know how to accurately install the custom windows we make, they can avoid potential damage to your home.
Do you also offer custom doors?
Yes, we offer a range of custom doors, including French doors, interior doors, entry doors, sliding doors, and more. They are made from materials that will make your home more energy efficient.
How long will it take to receive my custom doors from CDW?
The timeframe for getting your custom door will depend on a variety of factors, including the sophistication of the design, the availability of the production schedule, and the materials used. We strive to deliver your door in a few weeks from the time of order. However, the timeframe may vary depending on the specific details of your order.
How do I maintain my custom door?
Proper maintenance is key to keeping your custom door in good condition. We recommend cleaning it regularly with a soft cloth and mild detergent and inspecting it periodically for signs of wear or damage. Make sure to lubricate the hinges and other moving parts with a silicone-based lubricant to ensure that it keeps operating smoothly.
What is the warranty on your custom doors?
We stand behind the quality of our custom doors and offer a limited warranty on all our products. The specifics of the warranty will depend on the type of door and the materials used, so please contact us for more information.
Do you have a showroom that I can visit?
Yes, we have showrooms that let us serve Southern California. When you visit our location, you can talk to our knowledgeable representatives who are trained in all aspects of the performance and design of our windows and doors. They are ready to assist you with your home improvement needs.
Should I Install My Own Windows?
Why You Shouldn’t Install Your Own Windows
Installing new windows may seem like a straightforward DIY project, but the reality is far more complex. Even experienced homeowners can run into serious issues that lead to poor performance, structural damage, and even safety hazards. Professional installation is the best choice for your upgrade.
When You install Yours Own Windows You Can Lead to Air and Water Leaks
One of the biggest risks of DIY window installation is failing to achieve a proper seal. Even a small gap between the window frame and the wall can cause major problems, including:
Drafts & Higher Energy Bills – Air leaks force your HVAC system to work harder, increasing energy costs.
Moisture Intrusion – Poor sealing allows rain and humidity to seep in, leading to mold, rot, and water damage.
Reduced Insulation Performance – If the window isn’t perfectly flush with the framing, insulation fails, making your home less comfortable.
Our pro installers use precision techniques—such as proper flashing, sealants, and insulation—to ensure an airtight, watertight fit.
Structural Integrity Risks
Windows are structural components of your home, and improper installation can weaken the building envelope. Common DIY mistakes include:
Incorrect Framing Adjustments – Cutting too much or too little from the rough opening can compromise stability.
Improper Shim Usage – Shims must be placed correctly to prevent warping and ensure smooth operation.
Damaging Load-Bearing Elements – Removing or altering support structures can lead to sagging or even wall failure over time.
A professional installer knows how to reinforce the opening and maintain structural integrity while fitting your new windows.
Safety Hazards
Working with large, heavy glass panes and power tools presents serious risks, including:
Glass Breakage & Injury – Handling fragile window panes without proper equipment can lead to cuts or worse.
Falls from Heights – Installing second-story windows requires secure scaffolding or harnesses.
Tool-Related Accidents – Misusing saws, drills, or nail guns can cause severe injuries.
We have the training, safety gear, and experience to avoid these dangers.
Time, Effort, and Hidden Costs
Many DIYers underestimate the complexity of window installation, leading to:
Extended Project Timelines – What might take a professional a few hours could take a homeowner days or weeks.
Repeated Trips to the Hardware Store – Incorrect measurements or installation errors often require additional materials.
Costly Corrections – Fixing mistakes (like a misaligned frame or broken glass) can be more expensive than hiring a pro from the start.
And all of that is only if this goes well.
Weakened Long-Term Performance
Even if a DIY-installed window looks fine initially, hidden issues can arise over time, such as:
Sticking or Difficult Operation – Improper alignment makes windows hard to open and close.
Premature Wear & Tear – Poorly installed windows may develop cracks, drafts, or condensation between panes.
Decreased Energy Efficiency – Gaps and poor insulation reduce the window’s ability to regulate indoor temperatures.
What Can I Expect With Professional Window Installation?
Personalized Consultation and Design Assistance
Professional window installation begins with an in-home or virtual consultation. At this stage, your installer evaluates several key factors:
Your home’s architecture and style: No matter your property, your windows should complement the existing structure.
Sun exposure: Professionals may recommend specific glazing or UV coatings to mitigate heat.
Ventilation needs: Some rooms may benefit from operable windows (like casements or sliders), while others might need fixed picture windows for views and light.
Noise reduction goals: If your home is near a busy street, installers can help you choose windows with sound-dampening glass.
This consultation phase also includes a discussion about frame materials, grid patterns, tinting options, and hardware finishes—all tailored to your taste and your home’s requirements.
Precise, Professional Measurements
Once you finalize your design selections, we take exact measurements. This isn’t a simple height and width assessment—installers measure depth, check for level framing, and evaluate the structural condition of surrounding walls and sills.
If the existing window opening is slightly out of square (which is often the case in older homes), a custom window will be manufactured to account for those differences. Proper measurement ensures a snug, energy-efficient fit that reduces the risk of drafts and water intrusion.
Custom Window Fabrication
After measurements are completed, your custom windows are built to order. This fabrication process typically includes features tailored to the Phoenix climate, such as:
Dual-pane or triple-pane glass for thermal insulation
Low-E coatings that reduce solar heat gain
Gas fills between panes (like argon or krypton) to further insulate
Frames made from materials that resist warping under extreme heat, such as vinyl or fiberglass
The result? A set of windows engineered specifically for your home and local conditions.
Safe, Professional Removal of Old Windows
Once your custom windows are ready, installation begins. The first step is carefully removing the old windows. Professionals do this in a way that minimizes damage to the surrounding siding, drywall, stucco, or trim.
Unlike DIY approaches, professional removal includes:
Protecting your interior flooring and furniture
Avoiding damage to the window opening’s structure
Identifying any signs of wood rot, mold, or water damage before proceeding
Properly disposing of the old windows, in accordance with local regulations
This careful approach protects your home’s structure and ensures the new windows will be installed in a clean, sound opening.
Accurate, Code-Compliant Installation
With the old windows out and the openings prepped, the new windows are installed. This step is where experience makes all the difference. Our team uses tools to make sure every window is:
Level and square: Prevents future operational problems
Properly insulated: Minimizes heat transfer and air leaks
Securely anchored: Prevents shifting, rattling, or water intrusion
Flashed and sealed: Protects against water infiltration during rainstorms, even rare desert ones
In addition, a quality installation ensures compliance with Phoenix-area building codes, which may include requirements for tempered glass in certain locations, energy efficiency standards (such as ENERGY STAR certification), and egress window sizing in bedrooms.
Finishing Touches and Clean-Up
After installers install and seal the windows, they take care of the finishing work:
Interior trim and molding are carefully replaced or refinished to match the surrounding walls.
Exterior caulking is applied to prevent moisture entry while blending in with the existing siding or stucco.
Screens and hardware are installed and tested for proper operation.
At this stage, the installers also clean up any debris, remove tools and packaging, and ensure the site is as clean—or cleaner—than when they arrived.

Why Get Customized Windows?
Custom window installation offers benefits far beyond those of standard, mass-produced units. From better energy savings to optimized functionality and improved curb appeal, the reasons for going custom are rooted in both practicality and long-term value.
Tailored Energy Efficiency for Arizona’s Climate
One of the most common reasons to invest in custom windows is to improve your home’s energy efficiency—particularly crucial in a region where temperatures can climb past 110°F in the summer. With custom windows, you're not stuck with one-size-fits-all solutions that may not perform well in a hot, dry climate. Instead, you can select options that are engineered specifically for Arizona’s needs.
Low-E Glass Options: These coatings reflect solar heat and harmful UV rays, helping to keep interior spaces cooler while still letting in plenty of natural light.
Argon or Krypton Gas Fills: These inert gasses between double or triple panes help slow down heat transfer, maintaining stable indoor temperatures and reducing the load on your air conditioning system.
Thermal Break Technology: Insulates aluminum frames to reduce heat transfer between indoors and outdoors.
Climate-Specific Design: Unlike stock windows, which are typically made to work “reasonably well” in most climates, custom windows can be designed with Phoenix’s specific environmental demands in mind—blocking radiant heat and limiting air leakage from dust storms or monsoon winds.
A Custom Window Installation Means Better Performance
Every Arizona home requires its own approach to window sizing and placement. Standard windows are mass-produced in limited dimensions. If they don’t fit your opening exactly, installers may need to add extra framing or fillers, which compromises both the aesthetics and the insulation value.
Custom windows are made to your home’s exact measurements. This perfect fit leads to:
Fewer gaps and air leaks
Smoother operation and better hardware alignment
Better structural integrity over time
Cleaner lines and a seamless appearance
That extra precision is crucial for uniquely shaped, oversized, or irregularly sized window openings.
Design Flexibility and Architectural Harmony
With our custom windows in Phoenix, you have full control over the aesthetic outcome. This matters whether you’re honoring your home’s original design or aiming to make a bold modern upgrade.
This flexibility helps preserve architectural accuracy—something stock windows can't always offer.
Better Functionality for Everyday Use
Custom windows don’t just look better—they work better. Choosing your own window configuration means you can enhance airflow, daylighting, noise insulation, and ease of use.
Custom Deluxe Windows provides you with the ability to make practical choices that stock options simply don’t allow for.
Longer-Term Financial Value
While custom windows may come at a higher upfront cost, the return on investment tends to be strong—especially in energy-conscious cities like Phoenix. The potential benefits include:
Lower Utility Bills: Better-insulated windows help your HVAC run less, cutting monthly energy costs.
Increased Home Value: According to Remodeling Magazine’s Cost vs. Value report, high-quality window replacements can recoup up to 68% of their cost in home value. When customized, that figure can climb even higher.
Fewer Repairs and Replacements: Because they’re built to suit your home and climate, custom windows typically last longer and suffer less damage from warping, expansion, or seal failure.
In Arizona's hot and sometimes unpredictable environment, cutting corners with low-quality windows often results in repair or replacement costs within just a few years. Customization mitigates that risk.
An Environmentally Friendly Choice
Opting for custom windows also allows you to make environmentally responsible decisions:
Eco-Friendly Materials: Choose sustainable wood sources or recyclable materials like aluminum and fiberglass.
Reduced Energy Consumption: Lowering your heating and cooling use helps reduce carbon emissions.
Durability: Custom windows often last longer, reducing the need for manufacturing and disposal of replacements.
For homeowners who are already investing in solar energy, native landscaping, and energy-efficient appliances, custom window installation is the logical next step toward a greener lifestyle
What Maintenance Is Required for Custom Windows?
Regardless of the material, all custom windows from Custom Deluxe Windows are designed with Arizona conditions in mind, meaning they resist warping, cracking, and sun damage better than most standard products.
For aluminum frames, the upkeep is minimal. These frames typically only need to be wiped down periodically to remove dust or debris. In particularly dry climates like Arizona, corrosion is rarely a concern, though it’s always wise to check hardware and joints for buildup or wear. Wood frames, while aesthetically appealing, demand more regular attention. Homeowners should inspect them annually for signs of weathering and refinish as needed to preserve their appearance and structural integrity. Clad wood, which features a durable exterior layer (often aluminum or vinyl), greatly reduces that maintenance burden.
Beyond frame care, homeowners should check caulking and seals around the window to prevent air leaks and maintain energy efficiency. Regular cleaning of tracks, screens, and glass is also recommended. Use non-abrasive cleaners to avoid damaging coatings or finishes, and always follow manufacturer guidelines.
Taking time to understand the maintenance required for custom windows ensures your investment stays in top condition. While modern materials have significantly reduced upkeep needs, a bit of routine care can prevent costly repairs down the line. Whether your priority is energy savings, aesthetics, or durability, staying on top of simple maintenance tasks will help you enjoy the full benefits of your custom windows for years to come.
